Who Gets a Candle? Friendship, Magnetism, and the Equinox Balance

Twice a year, the whole planet comes to a balance point, and this week is one of them. Tuesday, September 22 is the autumn equinox — the day the light and the dark stand equal before the nights start winning.

On the physical side, it's simple astronomy. The Earth travels around the sun on a tilt, and most of the year one half of the planet leans toward the sun while the other leans away — that's what gives us our seasons. Twice a year, the tilt lines up so the sun shines straight at the middle of the Earth, and day and night come out nearly even everywhere on the globe. As above, so below: a day of perfect balance in the sky is an invitation to check the balance in our own lives.

And that's the real work of the autumn equinox. It's the harvest season — the time our ancestors gathered in what they'd grown and took honest stock. What did this year actually produce? What are you grateful for? And just as important: what are you carrying that you don't need to bring into the dark half of the year? You don't have to answer all of that in one sitting. Just asking the questions at the balance point is the ritual.

Who gets a candle?

Here's the part nobody likes to say out loud at harvest time: not every friendship is meant to come with you into the dark half of the year. That's not a judgment — it's discernment. Take them or leave them. Some people walk with you for a season and some for a lifetime, and wisdom is knowing which is which.

Every friendship has an energy to it, and you can feel it if you get still for a minute. Some feel like a warm room you never want to leave. Some feel like work from the moment their name lights up your phone. That's magnetism — plain and simple. Like draws like, and the energy you carry pulls in the people who match it. Get honest about what you're carrying, and you'll see exactly why some friendships light you up and others wear you out.

And sometimes the honest answer is that it's time to let one go. Not with a fight, not with a big speech — just a quiet releasing. You can love someone and still admit the road has forked. Holding on past the ending doesn't honor what you had; it just clogs the doorway.

Because here's what people miss: every time you release what's finished, you open a doorway for what's next. Empty hands can receive. The friendships that match who you're becoming can't get through a door blocked by the ones you've outgrown.

So before Monday night, take honest stock. Who gets a candle?

The Equinox Friendship Spell

Cast the night before the equinox — Monday, September 21 — at sunset, as the moon waxes toward full.

Red for me and pink for you,
Flames of friendship, warm and true.
Heart to heart and light to light,
Bless this bond on this moonlit night.

Inscribe your name on a red candle and your friend's name on a pink one. Set them a foot apart, light them together, and chant three times. Close with: Blessed be, blessed be, blessed be.
